I know the question sounds kind of silly, but I've been becoming more and more restless and I don't think it's very healthy. You know that thing where you shake your leg up and down when you're sitting down, I do that ALL the time. It is impossible for me to be sitting and not shaking.
Last night, I was lying in bed trying to get to sleep and since I couldn't shake my leg cuz I wasn't sitting I started tapping my foot, really fast.
I also have this need for speed (yes, I know, a lame cliche, but it's true!). If i'm going 80, that's too slow. 85 is okay, and 90 is good. It's as if I have all this energy inside me that I somehow need to let out. Do I just need to exercise more or something to release energy or what? The shaking all the time might not sound like a lot but it is! I tried to make myself stop today and I was going nuts, it was too uncomfortable not to.

Is it possible you have adult ADHD? Get a doctor to check. And believe it or not, I've heard that caffeine actually HELPS to calm you down in some situations, though I'm no expert.

Hello,
I have ADHD and I was diagnosed as an adult. I had many of the same problems you did. Of course, you should see a psychiatrist if you also have trouble focusing on projects or work, etc.
One thing I ask you to try is exercise, especially running. When I started running 4 times a week, at least 2 miles per workout, I slept better and focused more clearly. Also, having a structured schedule helps as well. Organization is a key to living with ADHD.
I took medication off and on (I always forgot...of course... I have ADHD!), but when I started my exercise routine, it really gave me an edge. I also learned cognitive-behavior changes, like how to study more efficiently and not let ADHD run my life.
If you have ADHD it takes more than medication to put your life on the right track! A wiggly leg and hard time sleeping is only part of a larger problem. See a psychiatrist, and no matter the diagnosis, a pair of running shoes will be beneficial. No doubt!

My sister has lots of nervous energy and is forever shaking and tapping her leg... she isn't ADHD or hyper or anything... maybe you should look at your life and see if anything is frustrating you or holding you back. Do you hate your job? Do you feel stuck in a rut?
We just put up with my sister's shaking because we are so used to it....

The first order of business is to see a health care provider to rule out any physical cause. If it is not physical, I think you might have just picked up a habit. Habits can sneak up on you, and are not always easy to break (like fidgeting). However, if it is an acquired habit, you should be able to beat it if you apply yourself.

If you CAN NOT STOP, then it isn't just a matter of too much energy. Time to go see a DR....there are a lot of things that can be causing your problem, but it sounds metical, not mental.
