Free speech should stop at critizing the government or the President. If you critize the government or the President you should face fines and prison time.

I am thankful for all the response. This is a question I asked two very Pro-Establishment contract workers at my work. They are fascists and think this way.

One small step for censorship, one giant leap towards fascism.

The whole point of the 1st Amendment is to protect personal expression, and one of the most protected forms of speech is non-violent civil dissent and political opinions.

The entire basis of our country is founded on the right and the obligation to criticize the government, and the right to complain to and about our government is so fundamental it is explicitly listed -- "the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances".

No. We live in a free society with free speech. Here's what another President, Teddy Roosevelt had to say on the subject:
President T. Roosevelt said, "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, it is morally treasonable to the American Public."

One of the most basic precepts of constitutional law in the United States, is Freedom Of Speech. For a society to remain completely free, it must be allowed to voice it's opinions for or against it's elected officials and/or their policies. Public opinion is extremely important to elected officials. Without peaceful dissent, a government could literally do whatever it wanted to do, regardless of the will of the people. If it is your desire to live in a country where this freedom is not afforded it's citizens, may I suggest the following countries: China, Vietnam, N. Korea, Cuba, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qua tar, Indonesia, and to a lesser degree: Venezuela, Chile, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. There are of course more, but they evade me at this moment. The above mentioned countries will without a doubt prove exactly why freedom of speech is essential for a free and democratic society.

I hate it while government affiliated with the two celebration makes use of skill of government to intimidate the folk, oppress human beings, or kill human beings foreign places. i did not vote for Obama, yet not Romney the two. Romney mentioned he agreed with George Bush's policies that have been oppressive to boot. That mentioned i think of i might extremely have Romney than Obama using fact Obama via now could be lots worse than Bush. My state, California, grew to become into specific to reelect the scumbag Obama so I voted for Gary Johnson, the only libertarian candidate. ideally I want Ron Paul have been president. He might have stopped the wars.

They already tried that. Go look up the ABC affair and the alien and sedition acts, passed during John Adams' presidency. One of the worst moves ever made by an administration.

People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of the people.

Dear Wannabe Communist:

The Constitution of the US protects her citizens and entitles all of us (even YOU) with the freedom to speak freely.
Our government and our president (the doofus that he is) serve the people in this nation...not the other way around.
Our government and our president (the dunderhead that he is) are not exempt, nor should they ever be exempt from public scrutiny and public criticism!

Sincerely,
The Middlefinger

You are attacking the underpinnings of living in a democratic republic. The whole idea of a democratic republic is that our leaders are assumed to be fallible and it is obligatory to point out their mistakes.

If we did what you suggest we might as well have let the Soviets win the Cold War. The outcome would be the same.

Maybe you should study the Chinese way of life. Live there for a few years, where groups are persecuted for speaking out.

You might find that more enlightening. And since I'm pretty sure this won't win BA:

BUSH SUCKS!! He put our country in debt and destroyed our military and left global opinion of America in a shambles.

AND, he doesn't do anything for any American unless they are the top 1% wealthiest.

BUSH SUCKS!!

Of course not.
Its always important to be able to criticize those in authority. People lose rights when there is no freedom of speech. That means all the people lose rights not just those you think don't matter.

We live in country where (in theory) the governmnt is for the people, by the people. So, why in the world would we limit free speech and make criticizing our government (for us and by us )illegal? It doesn't make sense, my friend.
