I bought my hubbie's ex's sewing machine. I have had it for a week and she requested that I pay her today since she will be in the area. I have spent $50 in supplies, fixed the bobbin that was not functioning and I am in the middle of making my 3 kids halloween costumes.
She emailed me today and told me she is sorry for the inconvenice but she cannot buy a new one now, so she needs this one back, but I can use this one sometimes (like I want to lug that old thing back and forth).
Am I obligated to return it, and if not what do I tell her?

I didn't pay her when I picked it up because she wasn't there, but she needed her house to be vacated. She requested that I just pay her when we saw each other next which would be today

Have her pay you for the repairs.

would you be a big enough ***** and ask for something back after you sold it??? is anyone's word good anymore. I would tell her sorry I don't want to start any trouble, but the deal was dine the minute it was given to me and next time you should make sure you can get another one before you go selling your old stuff, if she sold it at a garage sale would she hunt the person down that bought it there and tell them to give it back? NO so don't feel obligated to give it back and a little advise for the future, don't buy anything form people you know because there is always drama.P.S. If you do give it back make sure you get reimbursed for what you bought.

Since you didn't pay for it, give it back and be DONE with this injun giver. You don't want to have to deal with her in ANY way in the future! This is not a trustworthy person. DO demand your money back that you invested in repairs! If you kept the receipts for that, and she refuses to return the money, you can take her to small claims court, and TELL her that if she refuses! You may get MORE! Just give her the nasty old broke down thing and have peace in your life...that is priceless. This isn't a person I'd want in my life...Put your own NEW machine in layaway at Walmart or something...Get rid of the machine AND this person!

Well, considering you bought the thing from him fair and square, I would say keep it. Not to mention all the costs involved in the upkeep.
However, on the more immediate side, is keeping it worth all the potential head-aches?
This is really a decision you have to contemplate all the ramifications of said decision. Do what you think is best for you.
I went through something similar to this with my ex and knowing the type of person she is, both from my point of view and an outside one, it was just easier for me to give it up.
Good luck!

I think you owe her the money. Why would you have spent money on t if you hadn't even paid her yet? Isn't that kind of like buying gas for a car that the lease hasn't been approved for yet?
If you don't have the money, give it back to her or offer to let her keep it until you can give her the money you owe her to buy a new one.
Either way, don't start an argument over this. It's nice that the three of you can get along.

You both agreed to the sale and you have invested money in it. Either have her pay you $50 for the repairs before giving it back or pay for the machine as per your agreement. You should have paid her when you got it and this wouldn't be an issue now.

since you fixed without her telling you to, the correct thing to do would be returning it. You might want to charge her what you spent for parts, but if you have a good relationship with her you might as well accept the offer and use it from time to time. But she should really pay for the parts you bought.

Tell her you've repaired it and how much it cost. She should reimburse you if you "give" it back (did you ever pay her for the machine?). If you want to keep it, pay her the money and tell her you've already invested in it and will keep it. Don't ever buy anything from an EX...OK?

If you haven't paid for it yet, ask her for the money you put into it, plus your time spent. So say - I will give it back to you for $75.00. She doesn't get to use you as a repair service. Take that 75 and put it towards a machine of your own.
Good Luck!!

If you buy something from someone they have no right to come asking for it and you have a right to not give it to them, you spent money for this thing, it's not like you borrowed it. I'd just tell her point blank 'i bought it and i'm using it so sorry for the inconvenience this may cause'.

I think it's wrong that she's asking for it back. I think you should tell her that you spent money on it and you even fixed the machine .. maybe she'll understand. If I were you, I'd keep it because you cant sell something and then take it back. it's yours now.
