I have owned many Firebirds, (and still do) and no they are not good in the winter. The rear trunk is too light, which causes the car to not react as well in the snow, and slide all the time, they handle very bad on their own. "There are exceptions to everything though" You may do a little modifications and add sand bags or other sources of weight in the trunk, and a pair of $300 a piece snow tires (at least in the back) then you will be set. These cars are also rear wheel drive, which causes another problem (without excellent snow tread), since most people know front wheel drive vehicles are always best in the winter when you don't have a 4x4. But if you have the money for special tires, then go for it. I modified a Pontiac Fiero one year for the snow, and it drove like a tank through it. But if you cannot modify the car, I would not drive it this winter.

Winter handling not good. Good snow tires and be careful.
The mileage is about right for a 19 year old machine.

Arrange to have the car inspected by a good mechanic, compression testing, wheel bearings, transmission, etc.
It will be money well spent, if you are serious about buying the car and may save you some grief later on.

Good Luck,

I have owned 3 of these cars and i live in kentucky they are HORRIBLE IN THE SNOW!!!
the only way i could even get aroung was to put snow tires on them and 300lbs of concrete mix in the hatch well
Park this car in the winter and buy a 4wd or a front wheel drive hooptie.

with v-8 the rear kicks out very easy, at low speeds this is controllable . at higher speeds you meet trees and it becomes no fun at all. on the plus side the f body was never as nervous as the fox platformed mustangs, adding a posi diff helps but let your own experience be your guide and pay attention to what your inner ear [about balance and motion] tells you.

Ive had several i wouldn't drive them in the winter but if you have to then put aggressive snow tires on it (remember to take them off in the summer) and put 2 50lb. bags of sand rapped with like 2 garbage bags each in the lower part of the trunk good luck and don't get cocky with it

Look for worn out and leaking rear axle assy, slipping transmission, worn out door hinges, handles and latches, non-operative windows, rotted interiors, falling headliner, sagging seat bottoms, HVAC controls broken, squeeking suspension, numb steering, leaking hydraulics, cracked windsheild, cooling system leaks, .....did I leave anything out? Oh, yea...don't drive it in snow.
