EXTINCT CATS

http://www.boneclones.com/BC-019A.htm says that the American lion (Panthera leo atrox or Felis oatrox) lived 14,000 years ago and is considered to be the largest species of cat to have ever roamed the Earth. One individual weighed 900 pounds, while African lions weigh an average of 300 pounds.
http://www.beringia.com/02/02maina5.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_lion have additional information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_lion says that the closely related Eurasian cave lion (Pantehera leo spelaea) was the largest cat ever and was 25% larger than the modern lion.

http://www.lioncentral.com/lionnews.html says that the purpose of the sabre teeth of sabre-tooth tigers is controversial. Some people suggest that the canines were used to kill prey. Others believe the teeth were used for display, indicating that sabre-tooths were social animals."

Michael J Benton wrote 'The rise of the mammals'. He sais that the knife-like sabre teeth were blunt at the ends and could not be used for puncturing the prey or for slicing off its skin. Smildon probbaly grasped loose skin on the neck of its victim and shook and pulled until it could close its jaws annd tear out a great chunk of skin. If the prey escaped, the sabre-tooth followed it and waited until the prey bled to death.

http://wiw.org/~jess/archives/2003/12/07/bear-versus-tiger/ has various comments. Travis Jackson says that the sabre-toothed tiger (Smilodon fatalis) was much stronger than today's cats and were built like a grizzly bear, with the same power. Sabre-tooths weighed 500-750 pounds and could hit and strike harder than today's cats. The long canines were very brittle and a charge could knock down a bison, while the canines killed by going for the neck.
