I wonder if anyone else has noticed... I'm a dancer, so i feel it very strongly. There's a charm in performing(or even watching) folk dances as compared to classical or 'western' dance forms. If someone else has experienced that.. pls help me explain why!! :)

Is it because their structure is relatively simple, yet beautiful so it can be appreciated by dancers and non-dancers? I have the same feeling about certain folk songs. Somehow they have been rounded and polished and loved by so many people for whom they have had a meaning, that they have acquired a sort of patina that everyone, musician and non-musician, finds attractive. They often contain familiar elements in different patterns and the familiarity of things leads to a kind of satisfaction.

Most of the folk dances I know are also very much a team effort and there is something very compelling both about working as a team and watching the interaction.

I think it has very little to do with their roots or nationality, though if they are danced in national costume there is something exotically attractive about it. The dances were, of course, naturally danced in ordinary clothes (or perhaps a party best) except in relatively rare instances such as the Morris or ceremonial dances as in Padstow, Abbots Bromley and the Mari LLuyd ... but those are not the kind of dances I think you mean.

I'm a dancer. Folk dancing looks technically simple (although, I never tried). Beauty in a folk dance has to be achieve though expression and expression only. I think this is what makes it so special.

(Riverdance and Flamenco are excepton - they developed so far that they do require serious foundaton. I'm not even sure if they fall into category of folk dance anymore.)

Folk dances have been handed down though the years. It is a part of a cultures history and tells a story about that culture. It keeps our ancestors alive and remembered through dance and the stories it tells. I love folk dances.

All folk dances have a flavour of the region from which they have come and purely based on the ethinicity and naturally are special to the area. Since other influences are totally absent in the folk dances and maintain their purity as it was from the inception people love them.

Sorry, I can't help you there: I'm not a fan at all. I'm open to any forms of dance (I've studied most) but I don't love modern or folk.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I thought the super bowl shuffle was a great some and dance though.

Even though I was only maybe 7 or 8 it was a great dance.
