Among other things, you become a senior person in one of the two major political parties. To do that, you probably need to become governor or senator. To do that, you probably need to work your way up from local political elections.

Of course, to run, you either be put up as a "representative" of a party through a primary or run as a independent. Then you campaign to sway the public to your side so when voting day comes, they vote for you, though they don't directly put you into office. The electoral college gives each candidate electoral vote(s) if a candidate wins a state (number depending on the state) in the popular vote of the people. It is these electoral votes that actually choose the next president. In a case of a tie, the United States House of Representatives chooses the next president.
You can also become president through the death/impeachment of the current president. In such a case, the Vice President would take command. If he/she declines, it goes to the Secretary of State and then through the remaining cabinet members.

Be well connected and independtly wealthy in most cases. Or in case you are well connected and wealthy and people still think you are a loser ( ahem, Bush) You hire Karl Rove to spread malicious lies about your opponent all over the place, tailor those lies, to those you wish manipulate into voting for you and uh hire that Karen women in Florida to fix the election,by denying people the right to vote, simply because their name is similar to a felons, then when the media states Gore has won, you have another station say you are the winner, then when Gore demands a recount you get the Supreme Court to stop that recount.
