1. Cooler air falls from the rain clouds because it is heavier than warm air, so it rushes out from the storm;
2. The falling rain pushes air ahead of it also
3. In a thunderstorm an updraft develops which sucks in air and lifts it high into the atmosphere (that's why the clouds billow upward) and this causes air to rush toward the developing storm.

The reason why the wind picks up before it rains is because the rain shaft approaches you and in that rainshaft is a down draft. That proceeds the rain. That is what you are feeling before the rain.

There is actually two events that lead to this. One is the air rushes into the cloud during cumulus cloud build up (thunder head). The cloud builds until it reaches higher altitudes, then, the air rushes down just ahead of the rain as the air cools. In the bigger thunder storms, this causes updrafts and down drafts which can effect the flight characteristics of an airplane.

The wind that you feel is cold air dropping down from the base of the cloud, being pushed across the land.
The wind is also warm air being pulled across the land in to the base of the cloud, to replenish the amount of air lost from the descending of the cold air.

The wind brings cooler air into the area. The cooler air causes the rain.

the pressure differences from the warm air on top of cold air rushing underneath make wind to transfer pressure to equal out the pressure differences ....

the high pressure is transferred to the low pressure by means of wind (air pressure)
