Let's see, commercial birdseed sold in stores like Wal-Mart are always a plus. There is also corn, the whole kernel dried stuff sold at feed stores as well deparment stores which will attract some birds, plus squirells, deer and turkeys (I'm assuming that you want to attract songbirds but turkeys can and do show up if you have them in the area.) Suet will attract certain species of bird, I believe nuthatches really like the stuff. If you want to attract hummingbirds, you can try one of those commercial hummingbird feeders.
There was an earlier post that pointed out the importance of trees and shrubs. This is very true and critical to attracting birds to your backyard. Songbirds will NOT fly across a large expanse of open ground to feed at an exposed bird feeder as they would be exposed to predation by doing do. Make sure there are some trees and shrubs close by for them to duck into.

In order to survive and thrive in our gardens, birds need:
Complex garden structure: a good mixture of plant types to provide a high volume and variety of food, dense thickets for shelter and nest sites or materials for small birds.
Chemical-free environment: to maintain a high diversity of insect and bacterial life in gardens, providing food for birds as well as promoting healthy soils.
Thick leaf litter or mulch: encourage worms, insects and grubs to thrive, providing birds with food and improving the soil at the same time.
Fresh water: to drink and bathe in.
In the other case, how about fruits?
Peace........

There are a lot of commercial bird food mixtures. Look to see what kind of birds are in your area and ask for a feed that is appropriate for them. Put the feeder in a place not too close to your house since the ground under it becomes a mix of spilled seeds (which attract mice) and bird droppings (that look terrible).

I would buy one of those long metal poles to stick in the ground and hang some bird seed from it. You should be able to find those at any pet store, walmart, or Bird supply store. Then depending on what type of birds you want in your garden, put a type of birdseed in a feeder and hang.

It depends on what birds you want to attract. Most birds like the black oil sunflower seeds. Don't buy those "Wild Bird" Mixes at the grocery store, it's full of weed seeds, and if the birds don't like them, they kick it out and then your yard is full of weeds.
