At 13 or so, your female body is ready to produce children. Every month, blood, etc., is gradually stored up, lining the womb, just in case a fertilized "egg" needs to implant in the womb and start dividing into a fetus, becoming a baby. At the end of each month-period, if no egg/zygote implants, the body stops this month's wait and starts the whole cycle over again for next month, and discards the load of blood it's saved---that's menstruation. About age 53 or so, this process will stop--"menopause".

Some girls start as young as 8 others start as late as 16. Your body is ready to have children. Your ovaries start egg flow. If ready the egg will catch onto the womb and make a baby. If not the egg/blood will go through the vagina and come out making you have your period. Some can last for 3 days while others can last for over a week. It happens once a month and you will not stop having your period until your in you fifties!

I justr got mine 2 days ago and I am 12. If you are healthy it will come out at a steady pace, it looks like chocolate syrup...i know that sounds gross, but its true. If you aren't healthy or extremly athletic and not eating or something it will spot. after the chocolatey syrup thing, you will most likely get more heavy flows of bright red blood.
