Firstly, depending on the local regulations, you will need a permit to open any type of waste handling and recycling facility. As far as machinery goes, it depends on how you plan to collect your recyclables and what you are going to recycle. A recycling facility can be very simple and consist of a tipping floor (where the recyclables are dumped by the incoming trucks), some material handling equipment (like a fork lift truck and a small dozer) and a baler. This would be all that is neceesary if you are going to take in pre-sorted materials, such as OCC (cardboard), mixed fibres and other paper products.

If you are talking about a single stream recycling plant where the consumer does not sort any of the recylables at the source then you are looking at a sophisticated recycling line which includes various forms of magnets, blowers and screens to sort fibre products, glass, plastics, steel and aluminum as they travel down the conveyor. This form of single-stream facility is also labor intensive.

Are you serious? Probably a lot of them! I am sure it would depend on what you are recycling. Why don't you call your local recycling facility and ask if they can give you a tour?
