I have a little four cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission. I mostly drive on the highway, (a/c is always on- live in florida) averaging 65 mph or so. My average mpg has been 23.7- with very limited use of the cruise control because I really don't like to use it. My girlfriend does use it every time she drives the car. Does using cruise make a difference in mpg?

no it will not DECREASE, it will actually INCREASE

the cruise control keeps you at steady pace which uses less gas than overcompensating by letting go off the gas too much then stepping hard on the gas to catch up again

in stop and go traffic you will also use more gas if you have the a/c on. the opposite is true at highway speeds. the wind drag of open windows is greater than turning the a/c pump.

if you drive long distances, the best thing you can do is drive with the windows up and cruise control on.

Yes. in 1975 when the oil prices shot up for the first time, Americans were shocked to find that they could no longer drive their huge 8 cylinder engine cars down the highways at the legal speed limit of 65 to 75 mph. It just plain cost too much and the Govt. was cracking down. Speed limits were lowered to 55mph and people were encouraged to use cruise control as a means of conserving gasoline.

When you dont use cruise, your foot bounces slightly on the gas pedal, that go-stop-go-stop way of keeping a set speed burns more gas than cruise would. So you get better mpg with cruise

yes it will. i used it on a trip this summer. going 72 mph air on windows up. 250 miles. I have a fuel econ readout. the farther i went the better the reading got. i was up to 33 mpg with a 3.5L v6 and three people. Newer cars adjust as you drive.

Using cruise control will help to improve your gas mileage, but the difference with cruise control and without it will be very small.

Yes, CC will help as it will keep you at that constant speed, everytime you slow down even a little the acceleration to get back up to speed uses more gas. Think of it in terms of pressure or muscle power, if you are trying to pull or push something heavy it is easier to use constant pressue than to jerk or shove. either will get the job done but think about which one is easier on you back

cruise control DOES improve your mpg. another thing that can help is to slow down to 55 mph. if you don't slow down, i can't blame you cause the little it does save your gas isn't worth it to me.
