bizboy,
Just because people from different nationalities WORK well together is NOT evidence that multiculturalism works. It is at best only a very partial indication.

ash_m_79,
India .... hmmmmm ,,,, That's the same India where there are riots between Hindus and Muslims and where Sikhs want their own separate state. Yes it sounds a wonderful place for disproving that multiculturalism works. What would happen, I wonder, if suddenly 250,000 white British people were to start working as highly paid professionals in Mumbai - I bet there would be riots and worse about it.

Multiculturalism only works where the indigenous culture does not feel threatened or feel as if it mght be overwhelmed AND where those coming in are clear that they need to INTEGRATE (not assimilate). That used to happen in the USA (except for the black/white divide) where incomers were keen to becomer Americans first and whatever their paternal culture was second. But no longer does that happen and we now see as a result a breakdown of inter cultural relations in the USA. Europe unfortunately has never had the US approach and consequently we do have these tensions building because the indigenous culture DOES feel threatened.

Xtreemist,
There you go again making UNWARRANTED assumptions. I have no superiority to anyone. You have assumed I'm White, British which I'm not. In fact I'm an immigrant of mixed ethnicity, but like Trevor Philips of the CRE I'm smart enough to see that our form of multiculturalism where very little is demanded of the incomer is not working. There WILL be more race riots unless the model of the USA in times past is adopted. That means tests in English and the British way of life. It also means that groups such as the Muslims have to put Britain first, not Pakistan or dreams and delusions of a wider Caliphate.

What really works?
Multiculturalism EXISTS.
It means that you can't put everyone else down any more. You can't make your assumptions of superiority without being questioned any more, you can't make people go to the back of the queue or the back of the bus any more, you aren't the only voice, the only game in town any more. You are mourning the loss of your own superiority, that was always a fallacy, but that no one dared to question for fear of vile punishment.
We always lived in a society with different cultures, but there used to be one dominant, lording it over the rest, sneering at the rest, trying to destroy the rest.
You are lucky, very very lucky. If there was any justice, the disgusting culture of the past would be destroyed, the perpetrators would be punished, and the supremacists would be given the kind of punishments they used to mete out.

Good question.....Throughout time this has worked and flourished too....In the Times of Alexander The Great...he controlled a land that was rich in its own culture and even religion...he didn't impose his religion or culture they intersected into one with respect to others freedoms..Also the Roman Empire did to a point as well...In modern times we have seen many examples of Multiculturalism...USA,Canada,Uk,India,Asia,etc...many are similar others are different but for the most part we as a human race have bonded and opened our minds to the possibilities of unity!!Most American cities do have there pocket neighborhoods of enthic groups that go about there way with independence while under the cloak of power!

What's your definition of multiculturalism? Simply many cultures living in peace and harmony? I think it would take a great deal of effort as you would have to get into people's homes before children would grow up with the attitude that this is ok. I grew up in High Wycombe, and had many more Asian and Carribean friends than white (as I am), I liked what I learnt from them, I hate living in all white towns, I feel it looks really flat and dull, but my experience wasn't the norm necessarilly in HW, I went back and did some work there a few years ago and foudn that there were some hugely and, in my opinion, shockingly racist views among my workmates who recommended that I not walk alone after dark as any Asians would be out to get me!! I'ld love to see it happen, I would feel much better off in that sort of society, but I don't expect it to happen in my lifetime.

"works" I think is the key word in your question.
It has worked in the past when each culture had their own little groups within one big group here in the USA. Say for instance "Little Italy" or "Chinatown". Do we in the USA have evidence it works here...no, not yet. Does the UK have evidence it works there...yes, to more of a degree it works there, but it seems to me that in the UK religion isn't paramount and isn't talked about as much as it is in the USA. My question would be, do we have to become less religious in order to have peace among cultures, and, do we really want to do this. Multiculturalism to me includes religions.

"Works"? Works for what?

Unfortunately "multiculturalism" is largely a "buzzword" in education, and nothing more. In practice it's remarkably shallow, usually aimed at just getting students to say "oh, wow, other cultures are cool".

You should see our office in London. I think at the last count we had people working from 44 countries. It works very very well.
