In World War 2, as they did in World War 1, submarines were widely used by both sides as the ultimate weapon of naval blockade, sinking large numbers of both merchant ships and warships, resulting in either paralyzing the enemy's military industry and war effort by causing severe shortages of war materials and products and preventing maritime troop transfers, or forcing the enemy to dedicate enormous resources to anti submarine warfare in order to prevent that from happening, resources which could otherwise be used in the enemy's main war effort.

Ever hear of a U boat? How about a wolfpack? Groups of German subs (uboats) were called a wolfpack and they terrorized the Atlantic Ocean for much of WWII. Hundreds of millions of tons of ships were sunk with loss of thousands of lives. That was just the German sub story. There is an entire story of the Allied or American submarines in WWII. There were even subs in WW1, but that's for another day.

Yes they were. Maybe one of the most famous was during the Japanese attck in Pearl harbor. US Navy torpedoed a japanese sub trying to enter the port before the bombing started. Matter of Fact researchers found the sunk sub recently.

the whole reason usa entered the war was german subs taking out american cargo ships., a major blunder by the german high command since usa was shipping to germany as well as "the allies".
