i've noticed most of the rantings involving religion and religious questions are by atheists. Arent they supposed to be neutral, or at the very least, happier? Are they doing a sort of 'conversion' drive as much as the next religion?

michael K i'm not being biased, but some comments are shall we say rather 'zealous' in both camps. Depends on which side you belong.

Atheism is as much as a belief system as any other "conventional" religion. However, many atheists take an almost fundamentalist approach to what they believe. It's the agnostics that have no opinion other than "I have no idea whether there is or isn't a higher being". A lot of atheists like to think they know best (as do many religious people) and shoot down others for nothing more than point scoring. Quite sad really. (I'm atheist BTW.)

The hard line atheists are the real fundamentalists and the most dogmatic. Why? Well one reason could be that what most have always relied on is the atheistic thinking and theories of scientists eg Darwin. Unfortunately recent discoveries like the 'Big Bang' prove that the world was created. Many then go into denial and then all they can do is rant.
Anthony Flew, an atheist professor of philosophy at the University of Reading and the author of Atheistic Humanism, makes this interesting confession:
" Notoriously, confession is good for the soul. I will therefore begin by confessing that the Stratonician atheist has to be embarrassed by the contemporary cosmological consensus. For it seems that the cosmologists are providing a scientific proof of what St. Thomas contended could not be proved philosophically; namely, that the universe had a beginning. So long as the universe can be comfortably thought of as being not only without end but also without beginning, it remains easy to urge that its brute existence, and whatever are found to be its most fundamental features, should be accepted as the explanatory ultimates. Although I believe that it remains still correct, it certainly is neither easy nor comfortable to maintain this position in the face of the Big Bang story"

A questioning mind is a healthy mind, and given the nature of this website, of course you will see significantly more questions from atheists than 'religious' people, as this is a place to ask, not to preach.
'Religious' people are not in the same position, as they believe they have all the answers within their fellow believers and/or their text, and therefore won't question.
Add the fact that some (not all) committed religious people using this site patronise others, and it's only natural to have a backlash questioning the text/belief model of that person.

It seems that way. I believe though, that the people who have hate in their heart tend to be the "loudest" on this site. Jesus taught love and compassion, yet I have heard people who claim to be Christians speaking hatred toward Jews or Muslims, or threatening atheists with hell. Jesus didn't display hatred toward others and He certainly didn't scare anyone into becoming a believer. I also see atheists full of hate who mock Christ and his followers. If we can see past all the hate, we will also find some very kind atheists, Christians, Jews, and Muslims - those who ask questions in search of knowledge or truth. People who do not feel the need to insult others. There are plenty of kind and loving people on this site. They just aren't as loud as the others.

No. Whenever I've noticed that Atheisists are getting tetchi on here its because Christians aren't far behind. I am neither but I have noticed that the difference is that Christians will bring up religion for no reason at all, where as Atheisists only feel the need to express their opinions when some Religious people bring up the subject.

nicely, i don't see the relationship between the two as the thank you to evaluate them, yet frankly, the reality that those irregularities are reported almost a month in the previous the election would not frighten me almost as lots using fact the subject concerns we could come across on the polls on the day of the election using intentional manipulation and fraud. I even have heard horror thoughts of sending out top quality mail and deleting every physique from the registration whose mail comes back, bringing up the thought they have moved with out changing their registration. actually, there are a number of different the explanation why a given piece of mail could be back. the clarification I say "horror thoughts" is this and different schemes look utilized disproportionately to poorer neighborhoods.

Can't say I've noticed that. Sorry. Im an atheist, and have nothing against religious people, as long as they don't try to convert me or send me abusive e-mails (which has happened a few times now).

Just as with religious people, atheists have over zealous people too. Do not judge all of them by a few loud ones.

There is a lot of ranting. I do it a lot. I would not say that any "group" is worse than another. I will say that, in my opinion, the supposed "Christians" are the most hateful and insulting.
