Isn't a birthday party supposed to make you feel good? I've seen over-the-hill decorations that include gravestones. Are such reminders of one's mortality mean-spirited? If not, what would you consider to be mean-spirited?

If you were an honoree, did you enjoy the theme? Were your feelings hurt?

PS I'm in my 30s. My younger (and somewhat devilish) sister says she has something planned for my 40th. I plan to be out of town.

i guess people are more open now towards these types of extreme happenings. if it was a friend or family who organise the party for me, i dont think by using gravestones or things that signify death as decorations mean that they are cursing me or something like that. probably they thought they could do up something more creative and unique so they adopted that theme. if i was the honoree, i would enjoy the party cos it was painstakingly put up by them. perhaps it could be a fresh experience having these kinds of special decorations in the party.
