I was incorrect. It appears you can carry them on in the US. here is a detailed list:

Maybe.
If your flight originates in the US, knitting needles and crochet hooks are listed as allowed items in your carry on in the TSA guidelines.

However, the guidelines and can be overridden by a TSA agent if he or she thinks that an item is a threat. So take along a piece of waste yarn, a crochet hook, and a padded self-addressed stamped envelope. In the rare case that a screening agent will not allow your needles on the plane, you can save your work onto the waste yarn and mail the needles and crochet hook back to yourself. Of course pack an extra set of needles in your checked bag.
In the many times I've flown in the US, I was allowed to take my needles onboard. But, I was always ready to mail them to myself if an overzealous TSA agent wouldn't let them through.
If your flight originates outside of the US, check with your carrier.

Given that, according to BAA, you are not allowed to take tablespoons in your hand baggage, and a knitting needle is somewhat more pointy than that, I think you should be put them in your hold baggage.

Yes, Obi Wan. Pack them with your regular "checked" luggage. No weapons (even pretend ones) are allowed as carry-on.
