The government should abolish national holidays that are religion based. And seriously do we need a Martin Luther King day? Do we really need a day for Washington and Lincolns birthday? And I mean most importantly we should do away with Thanksgiving because the US has forgotten the true meaning of it anyway. Its just another excuse for fat americans to stuff their face and lay around all day being lazy.

Religious holidays should not be national holidays. Now don't get be wrong I enjoy an extra day off with pay but they are still not constitutional. As for other national holidays why should they be? We all need a break every once and a while.

well i don't think so because many people still celebrate the holidays for their true purpose. my dad works pretty much every day of the year (not including the big holidays like thanksgiving, x-mas and new year's when everyone else is closed anyway) but he always takes off veteran's day (he was in vietnam), memorial day, and labor day (he's self-employed). for him it's a personal holiday that has a lot of meaning to him.
i agree that most holidays have just become excuses for retail sales and getting drunk but i think that there are still many people who take those days seriously for their own personal reasons. and we shouldn't punish those people because of the collective actions of some ignorant people.

Insignificant holidays should be dispensed with like birthdays of bad leaders and only important ones should be maintained like Independence Day, Christmas and other similar days. Many holidays is bad for business.
