sunat in Islam mean something or some practices you need to/better to follow/to perform but its not mandatory[wajib], example is to pray as soon as the Azan[call for prayer] is heard[ no delay in performing the prayer], its also mean circumcision !

One of the hadith writers- I think it was Bukhari- wrote that the prophet would pray with a sword/large knife in front of him at times. Ali's sword is revered by shias.
