gym+ 21 = aud
4 gym = aud
so
g+21=4g
subtract g from both sides
g-g+21=4g-g
21=3g
divide both sides by 3
7=g
gym is 7, auditorium is 4*7=28

If the gym is 1/4 as old as the auditorium then it is 3/4 as new as the auditorium. That means that the gym is 3/4 as new as the auditorium and 3/4=21. If 3/4 =21 then 1/4 =7=gym and the auditorium is 4/4 which is 28.

Say the age of the auditorium is .... x
Than the age of gym will be
x - 21.......cause it is 21 years newer
and
x/4...........cause it is 1/4 as old as the auditorium
Since both their representations are the age of gym, that means they are equal...so:
x - 21 = x/4
Solve that equation....and find out ...x = 28......and that is the age of the auditorium (See my first sentence)
To find out the age of the gym you can use either
x - 21 = 28 - 21 = 7
or
x/4 = 28/4 = 7
So the gym's age is 7 years and the auditorium's is 28.

Well it's just very basic algebra... If you really pay attention to your math teacher... Ayt??? Well this is how you answer it...
Let x: auditorium's age
Since gym is 21 years newer than auditorium, therefore...
Let x-21: gym...
So forming the equation:
x-21=1/4x
2nd step: 4(x-21)=4(1/4x)... that's because it would be easier to solve for x if there were no fractions... right?
3rd step: 4x-84=x
4th step: 4x-x=84
5th step: 3x=84
6th step: 3x/3=84/3
7th step: x=28
Therefore your auditorium is 28 years old, and your gym is 7 years old!!! Easy right?

This is how you solve it....
g+21=4g
*subtract g on both sides
(g-)g+21=4g(-g) --> 21=3g
*divide both sides by 3
21 (/3) = 3 (/3) -->7=g
So now that we know the gym is 7, to find the auditorium you....
*multiply 7 X 4... =28. TADA!!!
So you get the guym is 7 yrs old and the aud. is 28 yrs old!
So the final answer is gym = 7yrs old and the auditorium is 28yrs old.
