after my friend's parents passed we found out his real date of birth. now he is ready to apply for social security at age 62 he do not have a birth certificate but have a ins. policy that his aunt had on him at the time that he was born that have the right age, ss office have the right age, but the military and his drivers licenses have the wrong age, vital records have nothing on him. my question is will the ss office pay him for the year that he lost because of this mix-up? i don't know what to tell him. according to the records at the social security office he was 62 in april of 2005 and should have started getting ss then.

He is not going to get paid for anytime before he actually applied. You do not just automatically start getting ss at any age. You must apply.

The only effect would be to the amount of the payment. If he is actually 63 instead of 62, then the reduction from his "full benefit" would be less, hence his payments a bit larger.

Social Security starts to pay AFTER you apply. They do not go backwards. That is something else, like disability. Also, if he takes SS at 62, the monthly check will be so low as to be laughable. Better to wait until 65 or even 70, so you have enough to live on. As far as the birth certificate goes, there has to be one filed somewhere, usually in the county you were born.

You'll have to check with SS to see what they will do. There are too many rules for anyone here to know the ins and outs of all of them.

One thing to note is that if he had started collecting SS a year before he does, he'd be getting less (probably around 10 percent less) than he'll get now, so forget the lost year and get the higher amount for the rest of his life.

Social security starts when you apply for it. They will not pay anyone for being able to apply, but not doing it for whatever reason. That's ridiculous. There are plenty of people who do not apply for social secuirty the moment they are eligible. They like to contribute to society a while longer before trying to suck it dry. Your friend is even wanting to go beyond that.

Probably not because they will just consider that he didn't retire then...you don't have to retire at retirement age and from what I understand, if you work past retirement age would actually get more money.

No, SSI will not back pay because of any errors, regardless of what they are.
