it has transmission built by mazda. has overdrive with lock-up. 5 out of 10 times, when trans shifts to 3rd gear it goes into neutral. take my foot off gas and reaccelerate goes back into second. some times just coasting it will then shift. other times it will take up to ten miles of driving in second gear before it will shift. all other gears are fine.

My daughter just went through this with her Ford. It was worse in the morning. She took it in and had it checked and they told her it was electrical.
A couple of weeks later her battery died and she had it replaced. Believe it or not, the transmission problem is now gone. The battery was old and was giving enough power to change gears.

So have your battery checked and see if there is a problem with it or the alternator.

Good Luck.
