The will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel called for the bulk of his fortune to be used for awarding five prizes: the Nobel Prize for Physics, for Chemistry, for Physiology or Medicine, for Literature, and for Peace, all of which were first awarded in 1901. A sixth prize was first awarded in 1969, the Nobel Prize for Economics.

The first winner in physics (1901) was Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, for the discovery of X-Rays.

Here are SOME of the physics prizes awarded through the years that are related to astronomy:

In 1936, Victor Francis Hess was awarded the Prize for the discovery of cosmic radiation; in 1948, Patrick Blackett received the Prize in this same field.

1947 - Sir Edward Victor Appleton - the discovery of the so-called Appleton layer of the ionosphere, a dependable reflector of radio waves and useful in communication.

1967 - Hans Albrecht Bethe's discoveries concerning the energy production of stars.

1974 - Antony Hewish and Sir Martin Ryle - work in radio astronomy.

1983 - Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and William A. Fowler - contributions to understanding the evolution and devolution of stars.

1993 - Russell Alan Hulse and Joseph H. Taylor, Jr.- identifying binary pulsars.

2002 - Riccardo Giacconi - contributions to astrophysics, which have led to the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources; and Raymond Davis Jr. and Masatoshi Koshiba - the detection of cosmic neutrinos.

Astronomy wasn't really developed enough as a science when Alfred Nobel established the prizes back in the nineteenth century.
