Underneath my cozy comforter I find much peace
I can dream the dark sky's away,
And waken when sun is lighting the day.

A Great Tree You Were
No one knows who planted you there,
No one remains even to care,
your branches reach toward the sky,
Pruned and shaped, not obvious why.
What lofty goal caused you to reach?
What lesson was in you to teach?
What dream gave you vitality?
Why did once grow this now dead tree?
How long it took to become great,
Now dead and naked, ceased to wait.
When sun glared hot, you gave your shade,
Did children climb and on you play?
Lovers leaned on your trunk to kiss?
Did those good days you later miss?
Did by you trav'lers mark their way?
Weren't seasons known by your display?
Times have changed, the people are gone,
None looks for your strength to lean on.
All about are tangles and snares
Where ground grew a thicket of tares.
Sometimes a bird lights on your top;
Even that is but a brief stop.
None ever knew the depth of your root;
Who ever heard wind like a flute
Coursing through your branches and leaves?
Were you once the most loved of trees?
No matter how great you became
You are dead and no one to blame.
When your purpose had slipped away
Your life found no reason to stay.
Since no one said while you were here,
I want to say, "Thank you for those years."
Though I am not one who you knew
I pay this honor so long due.
Mem'ry of your love did not last,
Your wooden bones speak of a past
And purpose and a life,forgot.
I'm sorry it seems all for naught.
