when i finished undergrad, i did a case study of a local shelter for women and children, to see how the program that was being implemented at that particular shelter was helping the women to become empowered and sucessfully get back on their own two feet. I read a lot of research in community psychology about empowerment theory and applied it to this shelter.
for my masters, i did a study on the effects of ethnic discrimination on the psychological well being of early adolescents in NYC public middle school, and tested whether a strong sense of ethnic identity protected against the negative effects of discrimination - this might be harder for you to pull off though, because i was working with an organized research group to get the data i needed.
