You can chat 2 friends. It was one of the first and it stuck. it is also free with windows operating systems

Because it has become too mainstream... And it comes as a default search and some applications with windows, forcing the user to be redircted without the actual intention.
It is not popular by choice, but merely force.

because of MSN messenger. otherwise, does it have anything that is similar and as good or even better than yahoo! answers? it sure doesn't

because msn is on every computer sold (well 99%) and it`s never
yours you pay for the privilage of using it

because it's the home page predefined by Internet Explorer in all computers with Windows OS and many people don't know how to change it.... ;-)

because it's free, easy to use , offers video/phone conversation and it's funny (emoticons , wins etc ) that help people to forget their problems for a few seconds...:P
