The problem is, the metal connectors are surrounded by a larger plastic housing, so it is impossible to clean them with steel wool or something like that. I could maybe fit a q-tip in there, but that about it, not enough space to get a wire brush in there.

Have you tried Coca Cola? Or scrap the connectors with something to get to a new (fresh) surface and purchase the "conductive" silicon from an auto parts store...This works pretty good especially since they have already corroded then you obviously need some protection against moisture anyhow...

cleam them as best you can and then coat them with water-proof grease to prevent further corrosion. Corrosion breaks down the metal and eventually you won't have a connector to worry about. It's an electron transfer thing but beware... the more they corrode, the less connector you will have left and the more work you will be doing later to replace them.

battery terminal cleaner it comes in an arielspray can and just shot it in there and got get a barrel brush used for cleaning a .22 rifle and use that to clean it and then use some compressed air to blow out all the crap..

Go to the electronic supply store they make a corrosion
aerosol spray , its not cheap but it makes the job easy.

use a pipe cleaner (the tobacco type) then spray it with brake cleaner and pack the connector with dialectric grease.
