I would have to respond to this question after first referring to Jay Perez's response. I would have to agree with his summation of "life", and his attitude into why on earth is this question being asked...unless you honestly have no personal motivation nor ambition in life to be able to haul your butt out of bed on a daily basis. I'm on the completely other side of the spectrum than Jay. I hate sleeping and have developed a minor paranoia about sleeping, which doesn't allow me, or my brain, to relax enough to fall asleep naturally. Sometimes I forcibly stay awake so long I hallucinate, at which point I usually pass out. I wish I could find a way to sleep on a regular basis.
To put it simply...don't mess with your sleep..but appreciate it enough so that you can get out of bed, enjoy the day and life around you, and then gleefully anticipate it's arrival at the end of the day.
(Blah blah blah...catnaps are a powerful tool in the reduction of time spent sleeping...FDR (you know the former president of the USA WW2 era) was said to have taken catnaps throughout the day and only slept 3-4 hours a night.)

there has been no scientific method for that.
but when i was in vacation in barcelona, spain, people would close their shops at around 2-3pm for their siesta (afternoon nap). it is so nice especially after a big meal.
I am not entirely sure but the establishments close late there and probably the reason they need to stay up later and the night life is great which means people there would have less sleep at night and would therefore try to recover during siesta.

Split the sleep into two parts. Two hours in day and four hours in night. That is total six. But that keeps you fit as though you had eight hours of sleep in 24 hours. If you need only six hours of sleep in 24 hrs, split it into one and half hrs in day and three hours in night.

Check out the book "Enter the Zone" by Barry Sears, Ph.D. Somewhere he says that if one eats a balanced diet (according to his diet) it reduces the need for sleep.

Most Americans are sleep deprived. Why do you want to sleep less? You should sleep more.
