Americans want so much to be politically correct all the time, like "don't be a racist, sexist, ..." But Americans have one bigotry that they won't give up because it is hidden very well behind race and sex. It is called "class-ism" and a person who believes his/her life is worth more to them than your life is worth to you because you are poor is being a class-bigot! Most poor people who avoid getting caught up in drugs, alcohol, mental illness or crime usually manage to be reasonably successful by middle-age, ending up somewhere in the middle-class income range. Be realistic. Set goals. Get an education! Volunteer in your community. Be helpful and considerate of others around you. Don't be afraid to fail occasionally. Failure is only temporary, and so is success, if you don't keep at it hard. Good luck and best wishes!

I believe it is because people don't realize how big the world is. They see the same people that were born there, live their whole lives there and die there. They never left, they never wanted to leave and they never wanted to do anything better. I think they get caught in that mentality of hopelessness and that this is all there is. But in reality, you can be and do whatever you set your mind to. There are so many options out there. This world is huge, but it all starts with one step. As long as someone never gives up their goals, they can achieve great things.

People are judgmental and tend to look at certain groups of people as destined to be failures. I personally believe that in this country anyone who truly has the desire to succeed and move forward in their lives can do so.
I also feel like one should never forget where it is they came from and once they have achieved their goal that person should do something to encourage others from the same background or situation to strive to improve.
If you are referring to yourself, I am sure from your question that you will be successful. Set goals for yourself and once you've met that goal then set another. Good luck, and thanks for asking a very relevant and important question.

maintenance of the hierarchy of the class system. they're hoping that saying it makes it true. and does it work? if enough people incessantly tell you you're nothing, chances are higher that you'll end up believing it.
