that i like him? he is a close friend and hates these types of conversations. how do i let him know without being mushy? should i risk losing the friendship?

No silly! If you like him, be his friend. Sometimes actions speak louder than words. Ask him to go places that you know he likes to go to. Cook his favorite meal, go to movies that he likes. Talk about the things, he likes to talk about. In a fun sort of way, he will see that you share some of the same interest, and might make him more interested.

If he hates these types of conversations then that should be your answer. If you must then tell him straight up, "Hey I like you more than just a friend, but if you don't then thats OK too, just tell me either way and I wont hold it against you". This is simple and tell him before you start that you want to say something to him without being interupted. Good luck.

If he doesn't like mushy words, then show him by action. Show concern for him; respect him; be sincere and honest with him. Consult him often on decisions you need to make, to show him that you value his opinion.
He will come to miss you and your consultation as time goes on.

no, dont risk the friend relationship over a crush, tell him, but subtly, hint at it over a couple of weeks that you like him.
