dont need to do that every day. wait for updates. spybot ad aware and disk clean up, 1 a week is way enough. just get the firewall and antivirus. Kerio firewall is free and very strong. block all the stuff virus trojan spyware malware and on. Avast free edition antivirus is strongest in the industry, Detect and kill what other antivirus fail to detect or kill. Above all its works in back ground like a firewall. as soon as the virus comes it knows it and as you what to do with it, that means almost no need to scan. scan maybe once per month to make sure,but Avast is updated everyday. take only few second automatic updates. anyway Kerio does a great job. I got this firewall and nothing gets in at all. i do scans ofr virus trojan spyware and stuff. its all blocked

A little tip here.
Never run more than one thorough system scan within interval of 1 week.
Regular defragmentation also damages the hard drive. Defragmentatioin should be done atmost twice a month. Same is the case with a virus scan.
Running these anti virus programe regularly dosent ensure saftey. Instead upgrade your anivirus program regularly. Its best to have the latest virus definations installed.

Panda Internet Security will do all of that and also check for Virus's continually, without you having to run things all of the time. You need to have anti virus and firewall protection, which needs to be on anytime that you are online, doing a scan after your pc is infected is no good for anyone.

You could also do with a Firewall. Windows XP has one built in, but it's pretty basic compared to some of the ones available.
Try ZoneAlarm. They do a free version. The link below will take you directly to the download page.
You might also defragment on a regular basis. This places files contiguously (next to one another) which helps to keep your operations up to speed.

tried spybot on my spare pc and it stuffed it up totally. then decided to buy their better version and still stuffed up, asked for my money back and still waiting.......true story [stay away from them] I can recommend [not being paid by them] `Spyware Doctor' it actually stops you from even touching an infected site, even when that site is innocent of the infection [unlike some]. It's worth the price. PC Tools is the manufacturer. Get a good anti-virus {macafee's seems to be good enough-] & norton's sort of dropped off a bit from what I have gathered talking to pro's [webmistresses/,masters etc]
except for spam, no one's got the edge there- except yahoo with their `bulk' folder in their mail system. wish i had their system installed....

Spybot and Ad-Aware both protect against spyware. If you don't have an anti-virus program, you need one....and regular anti-virus scans need to be done.

yes you need to run a disk defragment which takes a long time to do. and a anti virus protection.
