I'm not asking for me. My girlfriend (who isn't pregnant) hasn't had her period in 6 months. She's pretty worried about it.. but is this common in women? Is it natural to sometimes miss a half a year's worth of periods?

No she doens't have an eating disorder. She's a college student so she probably doesn't eat as healthy as she should (but she's not a food junkie). She's just the right size, not to fat, not too thin. She was recently diagnosed with (and has since passed) kidney stones. I will tell her to see a Dr. asap.

No, it is not normal.
Women who have extremely low body fat sometimes stop menstruating. Pregnancy is the other obvious reason, but you say that's not the case.

She needs to be seen by a doctor skilled in endocrinology. Most gyn's will know what tests to run to see why this is happening.

It could be anything from too much exercise to anatomic abnormalities to a brain tumor. Can't be diagnosed on the internet.... get her to a doctor.

Depending on whether she is going through menopause then this is normal.
If it's not menopause then she might have fibroids and they may be blocking the flow. Fibroids are common and can be taken care of. Fibroids are in most people but don't always bother you. They are growths that are like tumors of different sizes. I was missing my period for many months too and was worried and finally went to the doctor and that is what they discovered, that I had fibroids. They didn't do anything for me though and just said they would monitor me. But the next month my period came back and I didn't go back to the doctor after that.

She needs to get checked by her gynocologist to make sure of what is going on inside. It's a painless procedure really.

It could be a lot of things. If she has gained/lost weight it could throw off her cycle. Stress, changes in sleeping, and also the lack there of, of hormones. I would suggest she go see a OBGYN, this could aslo be the start of something more serious. Such as ovarian cancer, I am not saying it is. But it is very likely something is causing the change. As far as being normal? I would say it;s not if she has never had trouble before now. Also, her age could be a factor. She could be going through the change.

No. It's not common. It means that she has some sort of hormonal imbalance. Is she too thin? Does she exercise too much? Is she on any sort of medication? Is she under a lot of stress?

It's always best to go see a doctor.

Pregnancy most likely cause. If not pregnant, then could be hormone problems (need to see a doctor for blood tests to determine this), or she could be too thin, or exercising too much.
Those are the most likely causes.

If she's been under a lot of stress recently it could stop her periods, but I recommended seeing a doctor, because it may be something more serious.

yes it does happen it has happened to me and several others consider her blessed but she should still go to gyno. because everyone is different but its normal for some it has to do sometimes with being extremely thin or obese also can be related to being extremely active as in a lot of exercise or physical activity
