Human Curiousity, is always a factor. By nature, we are all curious. So we try to find out why...
Another thing is so we can be rich. Obviously, when you're smart and you can put it to good use.. you can make some mad bank. You can also say to be well-educated and have a degree. But, what's behind all that?? So we can get a good job and a high paying job and have security right?? Money/wealth is a good driving force. =)
Also, to be able to know more than the other person. Bragging rights and pride are things that also drive us to be smarter. We're competitive by nature so we try to best each other. Just listen to two old geezers talk.. they always try to sound smarter than each other.. heh

Because you will not fall in love if the person is dumb.
Because no one want to have a dumb friend.
Because its difficult for a dumb to get a good job.
In this world there is only one quality where you don't need to be smart and that is genius.
Being smart is much more easier than to be a genius.

Look at your question. You didn't even ask one with a full sentence. It should have said, "Why do people want to be smart?" I think you are a good example of why people need to stay in school. I hope you do.

I think that people want to be smart so that when they grow up they can get a great job with much money :-)

Those who are smart is because they take the time to learn...and continue to do so. Those who are wana-be's are just that...they want to be.
Being really smart is valuable in being able to handle yourself in the world, secure for yourself a good and rewarding living and give you self self assurance.
Also its just plain good not to be dumb.

people want ot be smart because being smart makes them feel powerful and leaves the rest of the world feeling small, inadiquite, and stupid sometimes people are so smart that thier dumb

we all have our EGOs, and we need to satisfy them. It ofcourse gives self-confidence, but some times it's fake.
