An invention must be registered in order that a person can have exclusive rights for its use, commercial production and prohibiting others to manufacture similar items without payment of royalties.

If I invented something or wrote something I thought was going to really take off, I would definitely go through a patent Attorney to make sure it was done properly. The thing you have to watch there is make sure the Attorney gets no portion of your invention.
