The planning of the story is very important. One should always leave the audience in suspence to motivate them to continue reading the story

What makes a good story are action, adventure, and above all things, romance. It wouldn't hurt to add some humor, mystery, and excitement in the story as well.

That is what I look for in a story; a mixture of action, adventure, excitement, humor, mystery, and romance.

Characters I care about or at least find interesting

A plot that isn't predictable, is well-paced and complex

A story concept that doesn't remind me of the latest popular movie or television series

Good writing -- I can overlook so-so writing if the story and characters appeal to me, but I won't read it at all if it's bad

A good story has a plot which captures the imagination. It also has a beginning, a middle and an ending....

Upliftment, mostly. I should have learnt something, or discovered new things to laugh at, or my intelligence should be challenged, or I should be moved by some emotion. Anything, as long as it changes me for the better. I like Chesterton, Asimov, Dahl, Maugham and Wodehouse.

It's simple: a character who wants something, an obstacle that stands in his/her way, a resolution in which the character changes.
