The longest word in any major English language dictionary is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis), a 45-letter word supposed to refer to a lung disease, but research has discovered that this word was originally intended as a hoax. It has since been used in a close approximation of its originally intended context, lending at least some degree of validity to its claim.

floccinaucinihilipilification is a 29 letter word and is the longest most generally accepted word, was in 1992 Guiness World Records book. Antidisestablishmentarianism only had 28 letters. There was a word which has been recognised by some dictionaries but was believed to be a hoax so it can either be this one or floccinaucinihilipilification which you accept as longest. It's 45 letters - pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

1. The longest word in usage in the English language is:-
"Floccinaucinihilipilification" - 29 Letters and
2. the Movie "The Sound Of Music" gave us "Supercalifragilisticexpiallidocious" which is 36 Letters but has no meaning as such may not be considered for the prize though it is sung widely.
3. A hoax was "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" with 45 letters and no meaning.
4. Antidisestablishmentarianism - with 28 letters is still in colloquial currency for being one of the longest words in the English language.
5. Another word which has even been used by statesmen in government is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis with 45 Letters but since it consists of a series of latin words meaning "nothing" and defined as "the act of estimating something as worthless," - I personally do not consider it as the longest word in the english language - this is open for debate with the Guiness Book of world reports ... smile

It used to be antidisestablishmentarialism but I think some of the organic chemicals might qualify; polytetrafloroethylene, no, polymethylmethacrylate, no, dichlorodimethyltrichloroethylene, possibly, methyldiethylmethamphetamine, possibly. I can't be arsed to count the letters.
