Pay yourself first!! Have the money deducted and direct deposited into an account. If you never see it, you don't miss it.
It should be an account that requires a bit of thought and time to make withdrawals. If available use any plan where your employer matches at least some of your contribution.
The old wisdom does work! Good Luck

Swap your credit cards every 6 months (or when the 0% interest offer runs out), cancel your mobile phone and go pay as you go, but the most effective thing I find is to write down everything you spend in a week. It's amazing how much you spend on nothing. I spend £15 in Tesco on sandwiches in 1 week if I don't watch it. I could have spent that on a night out with friends!

Cut outgoings to an absolute minimum.
Draw up a 'paupers budget' and stick to it for 12 months.
You'll be amazed at how much spare cash you have in a years time.
