Keep your friends close, and your enemies CLOSER!
There is a reason for that. If you and your enemy RESPECT each other, chances are that you will not do anything to harm each other. You can agree to disagree without anyone getting hurt. However, if you both show blatant disrespect for each other than chances are that you will both ruin each other with your spite...
Think about it this way, during the cold war Russia and the US did not bomb each other because they respected each others powers and leaders, however, if they acted on thier spite for each other... none of us would have been here today.

Respecting your enemy depends on what you know about the enemy and what values you have. You can't force yourself to respect someone else...However there is a benefit in getting to know your enemy...particularly their weakness' and strengths.
*The people I respect...are not my enemies.*

If you don't know and respect your enemy , you are going to be defeated . March in all cocksure of your capabilities and not knowing theirs, while they have studied yours, bad scenario .
The Battle of Rourke's Rift is a good example.
The mighty British wiped out by half naked tribesmen armed with spears .

If you open yourself up to try and understand how your enemy thinks, you can better yourself and your game-plan. The more you understand them, the easier it is to defend against them. It is like the old saying "walk a mile in their shoes", then you can get a better perspective on their motives.

The benefit is you have a clear mind and that maybe just maybe if the situation was reversed they would treat you the same way.

Yes - it will help you to not underestimate them, and it will make it easier to understand (and therefore predict) them, and it will make it easier to make peace with them afterwards (wars do not last for ever and genocide is generally frowned on).
Failure to respect your enemy results in fiascos like Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon ... and war crimes tribunals afterwards.

I say respect your enemy as much as he respects you.
Say in a POW situation. Americans are always treated like crap, ask Sen. John Mcain.... And we treat their guys better than they have ever lived. Unfair.....
I say treat them the same as they treat our guys.....
And on top of that.... who really cares..... they are the enemy, why fatten them up so we can shoot them later......
