I don't understand why we do not have any ties with Cuba but yet we are willing to have trade with China, the largest communist country in the world. From what I understand, Cuba is a very beautiful country and we could do a lot more for buidling democracy if we opened up trade. Not to mention it'd be a great place to vacation with its proximity to the US.

In 1960 the idea of the economic embargo on Cuba was that economic hardship would get the people to realize that Castro's government and communism were not the right way to go. They would revolt and install a capitalist government friendly to the US. This plan really worked. Cuba then became closely allied with the USSR and got much aid. US policy was then consistent with the way we treated allies of the USSR. Of course it's been many years since the Soviet Union fell apart and we began importing cheap goods from China. One reason why the trade restrictions weren't lifted since this time -- many Florida voters oppose laws and policies which may aid Castro's government. Florida is an important state in the electoral process, you know.

Of course! What have we accomplished by not having Cuba as a trading partner? I am sure Castro has personally gotten anything and everything he desired. The only ones our embargo has affected are the Cuban people and they have absolutely no say in their government. When will our government wake up and realize they are not going to force Castro out with an American embargo.

This is the American governments way of punishing Castro for turning his back on the US after getting assistance with the overthrow of Batista. Started with Kennedy and each president since has followed in step.

We may have the greatest country in the world, but not always the smartest government

Not until Castro is buried and the worms are choking on him. If money did start to flow into Cuba it would not go to the people, merchants, workers etc.. They would still have the crappy life they have now.

Maybe when they get a new leader and change their views a little.....
