See the ref. for an overview of several thermometer types used in the food industry. These include thermocouples, infrared remote sensors, bimetallic, and single-use indicating strips. In addition there are thermometers to cover a wider temperature range and provide greater accuracy, for furnaces and research laboratories.
A common type not mentioned in the ref. employs a colored liquid in a glass bulb-and-capillary envelope. Its advantages are (often) high accuracy and its main disadvantage is fragility.
Thermistor based thermometers are limited in temperature range but capable of very high accuracy.
