I've read a lot of threads about our involvement in Iraq. Whether or not you agree with how we originally got there, what do you think would be the consequences of our (the US) pulling out now? It seems to me that most of the civil people in Iraq want stability and want us to stay to help get things straightened out. This would certainly help with stability in the middle East. Of course, the insurgents want us to leave. Should we abandon the people now because of the insurgents and just let the country go to hell? What would that say to the insurgents?

We keep hear how if we pull out, Iraq will fall into civil war, and civil war is the worst possible end result after all of our years there. but why can't we just do this:

Shift ideology completely, admit that our presence there isn't making much of a difference... and then stop pretending like civil war is such a bad thing. Explain that there is nothing we can do to prevent civil war, since its what the people of Iraq obviously want, so why not let them have it. Innocents will die of course, but s**t happens, it's war. You can't save everyone.

Ok, so we'll pull the troops completely, let the Sunnis and the Shites sort out their crap for the next 5 or so years until theres a clear winner. and once there is, make friends with the leader of the winning side, to get access to the oil. And if he doesn't want to play nice, take him out like we did Saddam...let civil war ensue again...repeat ad nauseism.

Ok maybe it's not all touchy-feely like "LETS SPREAD DEMOCRACY!!!" but still wouldn't it be a better approach since it could actually work, plus it frees up our military for things that actually might make a difference.

If we pull out the country will have attacks in the street, bombing and assasinations and armed religious groups will battle for control of the country in bloody coups.. Business as usual for Iraq. The country will find the same stability it had before in a few weeks as the people will feel that they can honestly choose their own government and don't have to keep raging agianst the insurgence puppet state. The best funded military faction will take control. That won't be the Taliban but could be pro-Iranian or it could be whatever faction we want to supply with weapons and food. Reguardless the world will have a chance to hate some other country while we lick our wounds and admit we made a horrible mistake.
The key effect is that Americans will stop dying in a foreign country for a cause that's injust and we can concentrate on making things better in America.

Hi.

Let me just start answering this question by saying, no country admires having foreign troops interfering with their affairs. granted, the US troops toppled Saddam Hussein and his allies along with "democracizing" the country but he was put into that position by the US themselves.

So the US said, once a government has been established they will leave. but that does not seem to have happened. These attacks that are being carried out by the so called, insurgents are against the US troops is because they just wont leave Iraq and let the people there manage their affairs in peace.

Now, if you tell me the US are defending the people and all that crap, its all rubbish. and Even if they do move out now fully, its all a mere strategy for Mr. Bush to win the upcoming elections coz he does not have any choices left, going to war with afganistan, iraq, lebanon and now planning to attack iran and syria.

It is all politics and selfishess.

And by the way, the insurgency, the guerilla fighters who are attacking the iraqi cities has been merely caused by the US intervention, had they not been there, these things wouldnt have happened.

For the record, one of the reasons US has been there and is now, and i dont think they will ever leave, is because of the Oil Supply. They know the US will run out of its storage oil in a few years and the main reason they intervened was because saddam had changed their dealings currency to euros from dollars. that hurt the US economy.

What makes you think that the US wants to pull out of Iraq? Do you know that we've built some 14 HUGE military camps in Iraq, complete with video stores, movie theaters, and all the comforts we have over here? These camps are not there because we are going anywhere soon. You can debate all you want, but your government has already decided what to do, a long time ago.

Do you really think that we're going to go into a country, spend billions a month, and then leave after we win?

You bet not!

We're going to stay there until hell freezes over, and get everything we can get out of that area. Expect more casualties coming home, for many, many more years....

I don't think it will matter if we leave tomorrow or 10 years from now. The vast majority of conflict going on now is between Shiites & Sunni's who are going to continue to clash until they divide up the country into three regions or the stronger of the two wins. What makes us so arrogent to think the Iraqi people aren't capable now of handling their own problems? Wasn't one of the reasons we went in there (besides WMD's) was to free the Iraqi people from Saddam's brutal regime?? Well that's been done and now it's up to the Iraqi people how they want to live after the fact. I personally think civil war is already going on and just remember the United States went through a horrible civil war that left hundreds of thousands dead. I'm not justifying it only trying to look at it from the perspective of the Iraqi people. I really believe they want us out so they can solve their own problems.

Pulling out of Iraq would be a great mistake. If the US thought that in today's world u can just invade some country and win it....well thats not the way it works.... U have to fight the insurgence....and thats gonna take a looooooong time. So if the US decides to leave....then u'll have another Taliban kind of regime in IRAQ....and nobody and absolutely nobody and guarantee that another 9/11 won't happen. So the US has to stay put and fight this long war....and get ready for more sacrifices.

Let me say I was opposed to the Iraq war from the beginning. I do not believe pre-emptive defense is moral grounds for war.

Now, the fact is, we can't pull out our troops now. What we have to do is win this thing, win it fast, win it now. Then get the troops out. We need 500,000 troops in Iraq. Yesterday. That's how you'll win. Overwhelm them with sheer gorram numbers and tech.

The consequences of pulling out immediately would be:

1. Iran gaining immense geo-political advantage from the collapse of Iraqi social order (which I think is a given if we leave)

2. An overnight price increase in crude oil of at least 30%

3. Most likely China or Russia moving in and indirectly supporting the visibly strongest Iraqi faction, hoping to indirectly install a stable government of ANY kind (in order to gain future access to Iraqi natural resources, including crude oil).

The Iraqi are involved in a civil war with us there, when and if we ever leave the civil war that we caused will continue, the strongest will win it and they will form the type of government that they want. The Iraqi are never going to accept a puppet government set up by George Bush in his image. That is why I think we should get out of there and let them do what they have to do.

The Iraq's Muslims will continue slaughtering each other just like they have been doing since way before the U.S. arrived on the scene. All we have managed to do is slow it down a little. There never will be and never has been peace in the Middle East.

No matter of the time we pull out of Iraq there will be a civil war between the shites and the Sunnis. To be honest it really makes no matter.
