I have to admit I really could care less. I recall growing up when it was cool to walk to school wearing a light winter jacket and I'd be bundled up to my eyeballs and if people didn't like it they could cow off.
Now...I bought a very basic, but good quality car that people have laughed at. No AC, No power anything, but it always starts, it uses little gas, it's a good little car and it's paid for.
I have a basic, but paid-for home in a basic middle class area - the only reason I live in this district is because I stayed here for my son to grow up in a place where he could play outside and have a safe environment to grow.
I earn a good wage and can afford more than what I have, but why? To impress people? If all they want is to see what I have, then they aren't the people I want in my life!

That would depend on which society you're talking about. In the current society, I wouldn't want to be any part of it. Now, in Thomas Jefferson's day (Ben Franklin, George Washington etc) I wouldn't mind having a little social status in that group.

What's the point in your question? Everyone of us has some degree or level of social status even if it means just our name on a laundry list. Social status is a political question not a philosophical one. Your in the wrong category.

Who decides social status? I am more concerned with monetary security for my future (not super rich, and not dumb enough to waste money on socially correct clothes and other BARF-) Blue jeans and crisp cotton- one hundred percent me- and to know who I am and I always tried my best- I think having class is better than being in "a class"

I do....I don't have any political ambition...I work long hours...i have no social status..and no concerns of obtaining one.but i enjoy my life and what its offering me.....i have friends...they said in Maslow's hierarchy of needs the last one is self actualization...u can be self actualized without being up high in the social ladder in ur community...u could be accomplished and able to contribute to mankind...even ur social standing is close to nothing....

If I had any respect for society, perhaps I would endeavor to apply my heart and mind to the fulfillment of maintaining the respect of my peers. As it is, I attempt to discover those who appreciate the futility of such nonsense, all the better to create a new social structure. Perhaps the future generations borne from such groupings will enable a new world order...

I don't either. I'd like to enter into politics one day but not because of fame.

I don't. What the point of having everybody know your name. I am very happy being a "nobody."

I don't. Don't really care what people think about me. Of course that means I probably will unintentionally anyway.
