my home is historic and i need serious answers 220 grit is to much i just want to clean without material removal but am afraid of damaging patina

yes, use a very soft grade of steel wool. like super fine. oh and by the way lacquer is not a cleaner. litely with fine steel wool then a clear oil.

Mineral spirits with fine steel wool would work better. Lacquer thinner will dissolve the finish.

We restored a 100 year old home badly coated in residue from an old oil furnace. We used pure liquid carnuba wax to clean the mohagany woodwork. We then buffed with a buffer.
