Freedom of press means that information of a public nature can be freely printed and distributed. The workings of government are of public nature since government (in the US) is a servant of the public.

That freedom is normally restricted when disseminated information would result in harm. Rather like shouting 'fire' in a theater would likely result in harm, so too might some things appearing in the press.

In a time of war, enemies scan our press for useful information. During World War II, the press kept quiet information that might be useful to the enemy, including how many US soldiers were killed, how effective enemy attacks had been, and accounts of Japan's firebombing attacks on the US mainland were muzzled. Because the Japanese did not read accounts of their firebombs' destruction, they believed the things had not worked and gave up. In that regard, the press aided the war effort, saving American lives and helping bring the war to an earlier close.

Today, Leftists who would like to see America get a black eye insist that freedom of the press means that all information, no matter how damaging or how many Americans might die as a result, must be printed because the people 'have a right to know'. This is a conscious effort to bring about a particular result - aid to the enemy and more suffering an death for Americans. The goal is to discredit the current Administration so that Leftist candidates will seem a better alternative in the next election.

All the focus on NSA tracking of phone calls has given terrorists the idea of buying cell phones by the thousands, using them for only one day then throwing them away. The press has aided our enemies by informing them of the artificial obstacles we have created, hindering our NSA and FBI, so they can take advantage of those obstacles to do their dirty work.

The press is a powerful tool, necessary to inform a voting population while at the same time capable of getting that population killed if not handled with caution. As a journalist, I have to be aware of the consequences of what I print. My purpose is to support America so there are occasions in which I do not print information that might bring harm to my fellows. It is the conscientious thing to do.
