Hi guys,

Is there any danger of taking the L-Tryptophan?

I am not talking about the EMS cases.

My concern with taking the L-Tryptophan is what it is said on the Wikipedia.org

"Tryptophan has been implicated as a possible cause of schizophrenia in people who cannot metabolize it properly. When improperly metabolized, it creates a waste product in the brain that is toxic, causing hallucinations and delusions." (L-tryptophan, wikipedia.org)

Is it true that it can cause schizophrenia?

I do not want to take 5-htp.

Is taking the L-Tryptophan safe?

thanks

I didn't know it was available. I thought it was pulled by the FDA. I know we can't sell it where I work (we do sell 5-HTP).

If you do wish to take L-Tryptophan I highly suggest you make sure it's not sourced from a Chinese manufacturer. Many discount type brands source their L-Tryptophan from China, and that can be dangerous, so make sure the source of the L-Tryptophan is produced in America or Europe. Be aware also that some companies will state that a product was made in America when it reality it was only ENCAPSULATED in America. That is why you need to check with the specific vitamin company to find out where they sourced the L-Tryptophan from.

Do not take these over the counter supplements, especially if you are on any kind of medication (prescription, that is): especially anti-depressants which work on the same neurotransmitters as these non-fda approved drugs and I experienced serotonin syndrome, and I was so sick because I took thes substances, that people believe are safe, but like smoking or drinking, it is self medicating!!!! At the time I was on Zoloft, Ultram and Deseryl which all affect serotonin, as well as the tryptophan and ritalin. Just eat a lot of turkey, or ask a pharmacist what you should do!!!

I believe 5-htp is more risky than tryptophan.

there is a reason it was pulled so you shouldn't be asking anyone for permission to use something that is known to cause problems.
