First, it's more of a national media 'obsession' than just an Illinois thing. Second, Notre Dame is only half an hour East of Chicago. Since most of Illinois' media is centered in Chicago, since South Bend is about 40 miles closer to Chicago than Champaign, since a large number of Notre Dame students and alumni are South Side Irish, and since Notre Dame has far more football tradition than Northwestern and Illinois (neither team has won a Nat'l Championship in the past 75 years), it's natural that a good portion of the media attention in Illinois would be focused on the Irish.

I think the state difference is really myopic -- why do people in Las Vegas cheer for the Raiders and 49ers when they're in California? Or worse yet, why do people in Kansas root for the Chiefs when they're in Missouri?

Because the University of Illinois, Northwestern and Nothern Illinois (the 3 D1 schools in Illinois) are nowhere near as good as the team from South Bend.

Also a lot of graduates and current students of Notre Dame are from Illinois. A lot of Notre Dame grads end up in the Chicago area.
