An EXCELLENT idea! And likely quite legal as well! Uniforms act to decrease violence and bullying caused by some students thinking they're superior to others based on dress. When all students are dressed identically, the lack of differences helps to concentrate efforts in other directions.

If the school board voted that the school enforce a strict uniform or dress code, than it is legal. If there was nothing voted on and ONLY this school has just "decided" to do this then NO it is not legal, and they cannot enforce it, without a BOARD decision and VOTE. ALL parents within the school district whose children go to the school must have recieved a copy of the NEW DRESS CODE REGULATIONS, they may not get to vote on it, but they still have to be given a copy stating the new codes so the cildren will know what is deemed appropriate and not, with the punishment guidelines. Generally a school will have a three step punishment for not agreeing to code, 1st offense-parent is called & told to bring appropriate clothes, 2nd offense-parent is called to bring clothes and meeting with school principal, 3rd offense-Parent is called to pick up child and a meeting is scheduled with the school superintendant.
Find out if the school board voted "YES" and APPROVED this dress code, and make sure a copy of the new code was distributed to each family. If no one recieved a copy of the code, they cannot enforce until they do. If it was NOT voted on and APPROVED they cannot enforce it either. Every school whether public, city, or private had a Board that votes on issues like these.
Good luck!!!

It is legal for any school to adopt uniforms for the students that attend. Uniforms promote a feeling of belonging quicker in new students and they discourage "gang signs" or other individuality symbols...
Schools normally only adopt a uniform if there have been problems with gangs or if they have a large range of incomes where some of the poor students might be made to feel bad because of their clothing...
Some schools adopt the Black and White uniforms (easy to find and buy, normally inexpensive, and easy to clean) while others use their school colors...
Perhaps, instead of worrying about uniforms, you might worry more about whether you will be able to have advanced studies in sciences, arts, and languages.
Edit: Ooops! forgot.. Some schools decide not only what clothing and shoes.. they also decide the exact designs of hair ties, hair clips, tie clips, earrings, shoes, shoe laces, etc... everything that you wear.. and if they don't specify it, you can't wear it!

I think it's legal even though I'm in an other country and here all schools have uniforms..I am not against wearing them because with uniforms someone can tell if that kid is at a school age or not and be found in a trip with school..What is more poor people don't feel bad because they can not afford something trendy to wear..Since everyone wears the same it's good!
I think that it is legal and right as well!

No, it is NOT illegal. And as an experienced teacher, I believe uniforms are sometimes necessary. Note, I said sometimes. Talk to whoever heads your school board, or are the policy makers. I'm sure they'll give you reasons why they feel uniforms are necessary in YOUR school.

Get your parent to write a letter to the superintendent, asking for a copy of the district dress code policy. Whatever is not in this policy is NOT legal.
Do NOT call or talk in person!! Schools always find a way to ignore this....

If it is a public school, you can go to the district office and sign an "opt out" sheet. If you don't want to your child to wear a uniform, they can't force it.

yes it is legal. Many schools have dress codes as a way to take away the distraction or those who choose to wear skimpy clothing.
