i wouldnt say exaclty dizzy but as if my vision blurred for a bit...
maybe its cz m getting tested for anemia and low blood sugar which already make u feel like crap and that would be the reason why i felt like i did! Ive not been feeling too well lately so that prob has a lot to do with it...
plus i dont know ive had a blood test before but this one hurt a bit!!

The biggest reason for pain is because you were tense and scared. This is also why you became dizzy and almost fainted. This is called a vaso-vagal reaction and is fairly common. The best way to avoid this reaction is to eat first BUT for a lot of lab tests you need to be fasting. Being tense makes it harder for the phlebotomist to find a vein and perform the blood drawing without pain. The best way to avoid this is to bring a friend or your mp3 player and distract yourself during the procedure. Doing this will not guarantee a painless procedure if you have very difficult veins to find, or you have an inexperienced phlebotomist. The anticubital area of the arm does not have as many nerves as your fingers so is actually a lot less painful than a needle stick. Also, even the best phleb can miss on occasion and have to repeat or adjust the needle a little. This hurts a bit more. The pain of the stick is very temporary, unless they go through the vein and you get a bruise. Even then, the bruise is temporary and is a minor complication worth the risk to find out what is making you sick.

Mostly there is pain for two reasons,
1. Because they swab the area with alcohol, which causes a sting when the needle breaks the skin.
2. The person being tested is tense, tightened muscles will cause it to hurt more.
Try to relax and look away, if the Lab Tech is a good one, he/she will finish in no time with little to no discomfort. Also remember that everyone is afraid of something, with you it seems to be needles, few of us like them, so you aren't alone. To this day my husband will faint dead away if I'm there to hold his hand!

Yes it hurts like heck. They use a square needle and someone that has never drawn blood before does it. And I didn't tell you they make you do it without any clothes on. The dizzy part comes from believing this stuff.

To obtain a blood sample the technician has to insert a needle through the skin and into a vein. The only factors involved are the equipment and the skill of the technician.

It really should not hurt. It should feel like no more than a pin prick. If it is hurting you that much they are doing it wrong. You probably feel dizzy and faint from fear of needles or the site of blood. But it really should not hurt you.

i think because you're already anemic and you have low blood sugar that you felt dizzy and nearly fainting. and also maybe because you were too nervous about the whole thing.

depends on the tech and mostly because they use a big needle just grit your teeth and bare it and don't watch them insert the needle, for some strange reason to me it seems it hurts more when i watch them

Because they stick you with a needle? Maybe? Dizzy? Sounds like "ditzy" to me.

It doesn't hurt me. Do you look at them when they poke you? You shouldn't. Your fear and anticipatiobn of pain can make it painful.
