There are a couple different kinds of distributors for the 318. Some have breaker points, a mechanical switch that triggers the coil directly. Others use a variable reluctor sensor, which has a fixed magnet that energizes a set of moving steel vanes on the center shaft. There is a coil that picks up when the steel vanes move and sends the signal to an ignition box, which causes the coil to make sparks.

The coil sends the power for the spark down the large wire in the center of the distributor. This connects to the rotor, a part of the distributor that spins around and touches its tip to a set of copper contacts in a circle on the outside of the distributor cap. The spark travels to the cylinder that the rotor is pointing at.

The spark isnt "made" in the distributor. The distributor merely "distributes" the power. The spark gets it's power from the coil. The spark is caused by electricity jumping the air gap on the plug each time power is sent down the plug lead.

There is no coil inside a distributor. Distributors have either a contact set or "points" or if they have electronic ignition, then they have little gear shaped wheel called a reluctor.

The ignition coil makes the spark. The distributor delivers it to the spark plugs thru a rotor, distributor cap and then thru plug wires to each spark plug.

there is a coil inside of the distributor cap that is connected with the cam shaft and it spins around in a circle. There is a metal "thing" that extends out fromthe coil inside the distributor cap and it spins around and makes contact with the part on the cap that makes contact with the spark plug wire and when they make contact is when the spark gets sent to the plug.
