keep it simple and uncluttered. heaps of storage. even plastic boxes under the bed for out of season clothes or school books etc, to keep mess away. as long as its easy for them to keep tidy they actually might.lol.

Something bright and cheery and young. Don't get anything really plain and old, like a toned down floral pattern, unless the teen is very sophisticated and wouldn't mind. The paper lantern lights look really cool, I think it would fit in perfectly with a teen room. Paint the walls two of the colors that the teen likes, and then work from that. Maybe, a white ceiling, dark purple on 2 walls and then light green on 2 walls. then make the big carpet white, but buy a purple shag rug or something like that. Then have white furniture because that's easy to get and get lime green sheets, but a dark purple comforter. Play around with the 2 colors, and get loads of accessories that fit the room.

Personally I would do a room like that in a neutral shade and spice it up with coloured throws and cushions and curtains like red. It has a more mature/grown-up feel and it can be easily changed to suit mood. I think that if you do a room in pink its harder to change if you grow out of it. You need something that will last and is practical - would you invite your boyfriend up to your room if everything is pink? I wouldnt, but everyone is different. Or you could always paint one wall in one colour different to the others - just make it a main wall like one behind the bed or one that will be seen and not hidden behind furniture.
Storage is always a good thing to have; boxes, drawers and a big wardrobe with plenty of space is ideal. Get a wardrobe with a built in shoe rack and shelving to put jewellery/more shoes on?
Try adding art to your walls. Paintings, or a huge collage of photographs add a little personal touch. I tend to put photos and little snippets from newspapers or magazines on my walls - photoshoots, things like that. I also tend to go to a lot of concerts so I have concert tickets splattered across one wall and photos from there etc. You'll always need a place for a stereo in a girls room, so make sure that theres plenty of room for CDs. Maybe even a television if theres room.
I just think that if you're going to do a girls room you need to realise that she will be very quickly growing up and might not appreciate it if you have a pink unicorn border running round the room and lots of pink. Keep it simple so it can be customised by her as she grows up.

Throw pillows and big overstuffed pillows. Posters of her interests. A wall dedicated to her achievements. Funky bed ensemble. A vanity. An area to study? You can paint almost anything these days and it's pretty easy too. I painted a dresser I got at a yard sale. Ask her to help and have fun.

We painted all my daughters walls white then we bought florsecent paint and she put hand prints on one wall and splahes on another and on one wall she did her own mural and on the last wall she put up all her posters! I know it sounds funny but it turned out really cool. Just think outside the box and when your relaxing in your room what do you like to look at? Go with it and have fun!
